The Question:

“Why don’t WE get sent mom?”, the little note card asked. “Your parents and their family got sent all the time, bringing smiles to humans and helping them share, congratulate and console. We just sit here in this old desk not being able to help anyone make a smile…

This broke Mama Greeting Card’s heart. She knew the reason, and realized it would hurt the little note card. But she needed to tell her young one how they fell out of favor.

So Mama Greeting Card collected the little note card and all of her little note card siblings and gathered them in the corner of the drawer, quietly, so as not to raise the curiosity, and possibly upset the also dusty and rarely used stamps and return address labels.

Mama Greeting Card and kids

The Answer:

With a lump in her throat, but putting up a strong show of resolve, Mama Greeting Card explained, very bluntly and honestly, the following:

“Kids, our Humans have gotten Cheap, Lazy and seemingly unconcerned with the old and very appreciated tradition of sending us, real handheld greetings and correspondence. Now a new species of greeting card has taken over, and I refuse to talk bad about another Greeting, And you wont either children! Because talking bad about others is wrong! It’s not their fault and they do the best they can.  But they are so easy to send that Humans really do not need to put out any effort at all into doing so. Although cute at first, now people know when receiving an “E-Card” that well, the sender really didn’t care enough to take the extra time and put out the effort to send the real thing. AND sadly for these poor Ecards, many get deleted before even being seen! Further kids, as her voice raises excitedly,  “even if they do get seen, they NEVER get saved, possibly displayed and looked at again and again like we do or, looking down and sighing, she finishes, “or at least like we did…”

Done with her dreadful duty, and regaining her composure, Mama Greeting Card sent her little note cards off to play with the staples and paper clips, and she went over to the other end of the drawer to receive some well deserved consolation from the envelopes.

The Time To TRY:

Well…But you know what? The original questioner, “Roxy” a cute little thing with a furry animal on her front, was not happy with this! As her siblings went off to play along with their cousins, the A2 sized envelopes, she slid over, with her favorite cousin and started conspiring with a single stamp that had gotten free from his quite large and extended family roll.

A brilliant plan was hatched. And with the help of the stapler, some rubber bands, a very nice Sheaffer fountain ink pen (who also BTW never gets used much anymore) and the White out, which always seems to be near the pen hoping for a mistake, the little note card, her cousin the envelope, and the stamp were catapulted out of the desk drawer and landed softly on the cushion of the desk chair.

And they waited…hoping to be seen before being sat on…they waited…Then it happened! A very nice, considerate and kind human saw them and remembered, remembered the last REAL card he got…They were gathered up, the Fountain pen was grabbed, as the white out worriedly looked on…The little note card was scribbled, the envelope addressed and the stamp licked, (yes it had been so long the stamps were still the lick type…) The human, feeling quite good about himself walked briskly out to the mailbox, opened it,  positioned the card inside just right, put the flag up and continued about his day. Upon his face beautiful colors shined brightly in the form of a wonderfully infectious smile.

All of the desk and its inhabitants saw this happen and cheered, some, like Mama Greeting Card, and the stamps even cried, and all of the greeting card family felt a little hope once again…

Epilogue:

It was a week or so later, and because one of the humans left the desk drawer open, all of its inhabitants, including the Greeting card family heard the humans talking: “Yes they did get it! I got a call right away. She was so surprised that we thought enough  about them to send a REAL Greeting Card!  She said they really appreciate the fact that we would take the time to make them feel  this special. They loved the actual card and say they have it sitting on the mantle just waiting for the frame that is on order to permanently display it in. I gotta be honest, I know they are, and I haven’t smiled this much in years! I’m gonna send all of our cards!”

As the humans locked eyes nodding with affirmation they both heard it at the same time… almost a cheer or a happy wailing, just slightly, coming from on the desk? In the desk? That IS what they were hearing of course, elation from the happy Cards and office supplies in the drawer,  but the human reached instead for his Iphone on top of the desk, all the while believing he heard an Email notification, Oh no he thought, not another one of those Cheesy Ecards…

The Moral:

Regardless of which type, electronic, or tangible and Real, just Reach out and  say hello, congratulate, console or just show you care by sending a Greeting Card.  It is a very Kind & Thoughtful gesture. I guarantee a minimum of  2 smiles.  And of course many more  when your REAL Card gets saved and displayed!
